Walisinghe Harischandra Maha Vidyalaya (National School) is situated at the heart of the ancient capital city of Anuradhapura, in the division of Nuwaragam Palatha – East. It belongs to the Anuradhapura education zone in the North Central Province.

The school was established on 7th September in 1955 with the name of late Walisinghe Harischandra, one of the most eminent leading character in Sri Lankan history. The leadership of Mr.Jayathilaka guided 3 teachers to support around 42 students to reach their goals with hardships in a single building.

At present Mr.W.W.A.P. Padmasiri the principal of the school steers this demanding school consisting a staff of 190 teachers from all the roots of education. The student population has reached the number 5647 providing the school to be one of the most popular and the biggest school that belongs to the Provincial Department of Education for both boys and girls. The school is blessed with all streams of Education at recent times, such as Science, Commerce, Arts, and Technology.

The school also provides a great variety for the students in many languages, English, Korean, Hindi, French, Japanese, German and Chinese. It has nourished the students with knowledge, skills, attitudes and competencies for their future life.
